Hayes Valley Art Works (HVAW) seeks submissions of new or existing work for our upcoming juried show, Present Ground. HVAW is excited to announce that it will be curated by a guest curator, Samantha Reynolds. Present Ground will be on view from Saturday October 1 – November 5, 2016.
The physical site of HVAW has had multiple histories and roles. With the removal of the central freeway in the late 1990s and remodel of Octavia Boulevard within the last decade, the site was left uninhabited. Designated currently by the city of San Francisco as a temporary art and community space, the site will next be turned into low-income housing in the coming years. Constantly evolving, the narrative of the site continues.
If this ground could speak, what would it say? Would it be wounded? Rejuvenated? The intention of Present Ground is to call attention the unending, evolving nature and impact of the physical site as it moves into the future and as a recognition of the repurposing of space that has created multiple stories, histories and narratives left imprinted in the dirt. This open call is looking for work that can directly respond to the site at its present moment in time.

The guest curator, Samantha Reynolds, is an emerging curator working and living in the Bay Area. Prior to moving to San Francisco, she worked on a number of solo projects to curate public spaces while receiving her master’s at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Arts Administration & Policy. During this time, Reynolds worked as the Curatorial Fellow at Hyde Park Art Center where she curated and organized the public programming for a number of exhibitions and residency projects. Directly following this position, she then worked as the Interim Residency Manager. Her curatorial practice focuses on experimental and emerging artist practices. Reynolds currently works at Pro Arts in Oakland as the Gallery Manager.
Island of Stars
On July 31st from 3-7pm curator in residence Elliott Cost and Marc Matchak will present a series of talks titled Island of Stars.
The talks will examine deadly thrills, dashboard cinema, and priceless receipts. Speakers include Claudia La Rocco, Perry Trollope, Gordon Faylor, Sean Tatol, and James Emrick.
Stairwell’s Valley Step Works
HVAW is excited to announce the residency of Stairwell’s during the month of August, culminating in a celebratory daytime event on Sunday, August 28.
A collaborative project led by San Francisco-based artists Sarah Hotchkiss and Carey Lin, Stairwell’s creates new experiences that challenge familiar understandings of everyday surroundings. The project has taken many forms, from site-specific interventions to group walking tours to curated exhibitions. Stairwell’s seeks to foster temporary communities of curious and engaged individuals, providing opportunities for connections and changes in perspective.
Stairwell’s will hold on-site hours at HVAW as they develop their final event: an exploratory walk, circuit training of the non-athletic variety and prizes for those who do something exceptionally well.]

On Monday, July 25 from 5-7pm Cost will open an exhibition Peter Gray Hurley: Garden Drawings. Hurley lives and works in San Francisco making visual art and music.

Helen R Gaus
In this series of works, a painting evolves when spontaneous brush work is “corralled” by composed geometry in washes and lines. A successful painting finds a compositional pose through these sometimes divergent means of mark making. Working onto raw canvas and preserving it allows the armature of the paintings to assert itself and grounds the paintings in physical space. It also allows the initial dabbings of a brush to stand out for consideration, reclaiming an aspect of the process which is often relegated to prep work as a site of creative potential.
Bio:
Helen R Gaus, b. 1987, lives and works in San Francisco. She explores ways of representing contemporary relationships to environment, and has experimented with methods of art making from painting and writing to participatory and land-based work. This experimentation is driven by a pursuit for comprehension that pushes our human scope, as well as a desire to cohere different types of knowledge and experience into visual language.
