To celebrate a wonderful year of art and community at HVAW, we’re hosting one more gallery show and a Holiday Art Bazaar to close out the season!
Join us for a lively holiday weekend at Hayes Valley Art Works! More than a dozen local artists will be set up in the garden, selling original art, handcrafted gifts, prints, ceramics, textiles, and all sorts of festive treasures. Inside the gallery you’ll find even more work to explore.
We’ll have food, entertainment, and live music throughout the day—plus surprise drop-ins from the Adominable Snowman and other holiday characters.

Most of my works incorporate metal that has had past lives and in some cases literally burns, showing the patina of past flames. All of my pieces are cut, welded, and formed here in San Francisco where I live.” – Dan Newcome

Join us for a fun free workshop with The Gate Guy! Make painted rocks in a sunny garden. No experience necessary!
Your host, Todd Young, better known as @TheGateGuySF, has been active in the San Francisco art scene since 2014, the inception of his ongoing public
art installation “The Gate Project.”
MAKE AN ART ROCK!
Todd will have examples of past designs, brilliant colored paints, and will provide rocks for you to “get your rocks off” – exploring your creativity by creating an ART ROCK of your own to take home with you!
In the workshop he will cover some amazing topics and techniques learned through experience:
- choosing your canvas
- preparing the surface
- unconventional tools and specialty brushes
- paint and finishes (and why chose one over the other).
Workshop begins at 1:00pm on Sunday July 21 st in the Hayes Valley Art Works garden at 295 Oak Street at Octavia, SF.

Originally from Italy where she studied art, Lucia brings her watercolor experience to our popular biweekly series. Thanks to our core group of volunteers, the garden is looking great, even at this time of year. Thee wildflower seed we’ve sown will make for a real show come spring, as we anticipate another winter of abundant rain.

Watercolors have been a popular workshop at HVAW; among a variety of workshops, the plein-air watercolor workshop taught by Lucia Gonnella in our garden was a favorite. When the pandemic hit, we pivoted to a Zoom format, where the workshop gained a strong following and has continued twice monthly since April 2020.
Lucia Gonnella, a plein-air painter originally from Italy, shows work in galleries around the Bay Area and internationally. Her work is featured in this show, as is that of four other workshop participants: Sarah Young, a Hayes Valley watercolor painter; Sandi Palmer, from the Sacramento area; Rene Rodriguez, who has exhibited all over the Bay Area; and Barbara Early, who works in mixed media figure drawing, and also organizes and hosts the workshop. We also invited local watercolorist Saul Levy, who often makes his colorful paintings while bartending at Bimbo’s 365, and Taylor Emerson, whose scrap textile pieces are reminiscent of the movement of waterfalls.

The Apartment on the Playa
Burning Man enthusiast and artist John Baden built The Apartment on the Playa aka CityCamp, at Burning Man, so that he could bring the magic of the event to his home. The Apartment is an 8 x12′ rendition of John’s Hayes Valley apartment where he has lived for 20 years. The Apartment on the Playa is part of Golden Guy Alley, a Burning Man installation which will be on view this year on the playa.
John is generously installing a preview of the piece at Hayes Valley Art Works. From June 29 – August 12, visitors will be able to experience this unique, vibrant installation piece installed in our garden, before it is shipped up to Black Rock Desert.

Summer Scapes is an exhibition of vibrant paintings by two local artists that evoke the sounds, sensations and sensuous “scapes” of summer. Charles Unger and George Dolgy are San Francisco contemporary painters with bright, bold palettes, and both bring a unique eye to landscapes and other subjects.
Charles Unger: Painting and drawing have always been an integral part of Charles life; long before he got into music and became a San Francisco musical institution, he was drawing and painting. A major force in the San Francisco music scene of the San Francisco area for the last 40 years, saxophonist Charles Unger is known for his exuberant style and talent, and for a stage show that is unforgettable. This same exuberant style is reflected in his expressionistic and energetic painting style, which evokes the emotional experience of being in these landscapes, cityscapes, and floral scapes. His mask paintings also evoke an emotional response in the viewers.
George Dolgy was born in the USSR in 1960, and worked as an architect in his Ukrainian hometown until 1989, when he came to Philadelphia as a political refugee, and went to Temple University architectural program. He has been been working as an architect ever since. He pursued his interest in fine art through years of private painting classes, and developed his own unique painting style in his Philadephia studio. He then lived and worked in New Orleans from 2011 till 2016, when he relocated to San Francisco. His bright canvases and painterly strokes evoke the brilliant landscapes from the wineries of Napa Valley to more imaginative enchanted forest scapes.

Exhibition – NOW & THEN: The Art of Blane Asrat and Joseph JD Green
Extended! Through July 24! Final weekend!
NOW & THEN reflects the cycles through which artists come of age. Blane Asrat and Joseph JD Green are up and coming San Francisco contemporary BIPOC artists, both with bold, evocative styles.
Blane Asrat came to San Francisco seven years ago from Texas, earning a degree from the Academy of Art. Her work explores the sensitivity of everyday experience, with a focus on emotional and narrative portraiture and figurative art, and each piece involves evocative multilayered imagery, often combining physical and digital process using oil, acryla-gouache, charcoal, and digital mediums. This layering of processes deepens the viewers connection to the piece, creating a strong sense connection between the viewer and the art work.
Joseph “JD” Green’s work demonstrates an eye for detail combined with a penchant for quick handwork. He creates preliminary sketches from source imagery found online or from his imagination, and the result of his unique and intricate mark making are stunning pieces with an internal energy and movement that belies their two dimensions.

Eric Broers New Mural in progress on our Gallery!
Local muralist Eric Broers is currently painting a brand new mural “Lions, Tigers and Bears, Oh My!” on our gallery! Come by to see the progress! In August he’lll share more items inside the gallery too.
Eric Broers is originally from Chicago and moved to San Francisco in 2006. He quickly settled in the art community of Hayes Valley. His media of choice include sumi, gouache, acrylic, spray paint and brushes. Eric uses a minimal color palette for his hand painted spirit animals. Hayes Valley Reopening party: Fri, June 18
Hayes Valley Art Works presents two events on Friday, June 18th.
5 PM Make a Maze: Labyrinth
@ Patricia’s Green, Octavia / Hayes
Join us at 5 PM to lay out our new Labyrinth next to Patricia’s Green. It’s a temporary installation done in chalk. The four-circuit Iberian labyrinth based on a spiral will be surprisingly fast to make, because of a specialized tool called a spiral generator, fast to create. The bicursal “Galaxy” labyrinth, which is hexagonal, will take more time and effort. We’d love four to six volunteers to join in! Our labyrinth designer holds a very short ceremony to open the labyrinth. She’ll stand at the outer portal and declare, “The labyrinth is now open. May those who walk it find what they need.”
A labyrinth is a walking-meditation tool. https://labyrinthsociety.org There is no wrong way to walk a labyrinth. Children like to run them! If the walker has a problem that is bothering her, she might like to think about her dilemma as she walks.

When COVID first hit, everyone was trying to figure out ways to connect and continue activities while remaining sheltered in place. We partnered with Plein Air painter Lucia Gonnella and developed a popular ZOOM watercolor workshop, which was a refuge for many twice a month during the pandemic.
This show is a selection of some of the paintings produced during that workshop, by participants working at home, from a shared image in the Zoom, with instruction by Lucia.

Hayes Valley Art Works Community Cleanup! Sat. Aug 29 11am-1pm
Please join us (air quality permitting) Saturday for a socially distanced garden cleanup! If you can spare an hour or so, we would love to have you – Octavia between Oak and Page, enter at the Lily Street gates. Please bring your own gloves and masks. For this 4th of July, we have a special guest artist Catherine Sherman, who has created the perfect workshop for Independence Day – an exploration of our American Flag.
In her workshop we’ll explore the geometry of the American Flag.
Participants will experiment with new colors, patterns and textures using their own materials.
Please have on hand:
- a flat workspace
- scissors
- various kinds of paper or fabric in 8×11 or smaller
- markers or crayons.
The more colors/variety the better. Catherine will provide suggestions for sewing and construction to everyone who attends.

Multimedia artist Matthew Kowalski spent 27 years as a homeless, disenfranchised person. His artistic journey became his vehicle for self-expression and his path to taking a place in the community. He uses multiple techniques and incorporates found objects and other media to make the flat surface come alive. Matthew has authored two books about his experience, including Riding Shotgun Through a Hurricane: A Memoir of Addiction and Radical Recovery, a gripping memoir of his journey from gifted child to homeless in San Francisco to his recovery from addiction.
“Matt Kowalski’s story is a true ‘rags to riches’ of the spirit … Matt is one who ‘walks the talk’ as an inspiration and role model.” – David Kroziere, developer and cofounder of Art on Site.
Matthew also works as an inspirational speaker, and as an addiction Recovery Coach and Addiction Specialist.
Matthew will be on-site each weekend in August and the first weekend of September, making art and music with art and musical guests. Come by and make art and music with us!

POETIC WAX features the work of artists Judith Williams and Larraine Seiden. Both artists paint using Encaustic, a technique originated by the Ancient Greeks. Encaustic is derived from the Greek word encaustikos, “to burn in.” The paint is composed of beeswax, resin (sap from trees), and pigment particles. These ingredients are melted together at 200 degrees and applied to panels in a molten state with a brush.
Judith and Larraine both incorporate collage with papers, found and collected mementos, segments from journals, grocery lists, and receipts, among other items. Using the transparent beauty of wax, they layer and arrange these elements. The resulting images are a poetic mix of words, color, and images, with the hauntingly beautiful effect of the encaustic process lifting the work and transporting the viewer into another realm.
Larraine uses the language of textile arts to witness the everyday. “My work comes directly out of the chaos of contemporary life–in the found spaces between juggling young children, teaching jobs, stacked chores, and an iPhone. My art practice is my meditation, through which I seek moments of transcendence against the intense chatter of this moment.” larraineseiden.com

Duncan Dobson was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and grew up on the San Francisco peninsula. He is an artist, writer, and an entrepreneur in the food industry. A painter since the late 1990s, Dobson takes inspiration from the traditions of Andy Warhol and Mark Rothko. His work in “Hall of Mirrors” reflects his interest in recontextualizing tradition and imagery and cultural figures through a kaleidoscopic lens of color and juxtaposition.

IMAGINE: Asian inspired artwork celebrating the Lunar New Year
Exhibition runs February 1 – 28, 2019
Opening Reception: Sunday, February 3, 1-4 pm
The exhibition features the work of six Bay Area artists: Eric Broers, Katherine Chen, Tisha Kenny, Alice Koswara, Sophia Lee and Earl Speas.
Eric Broers, originally from Chicago, has been in San Francisco for the past decade. He works with sumi, gouache, brush and paper. Painter, ceramicist and flower arranger Katherine Chen was born in Taiwan and grew up in a traditional Chinese family, where she was exposed to the Chinese arts in daily life. Tisha Kenny studied Chinese brush painting and ikebana for 32 years, and her work focuses on floral and scenic depictions. Alice Koswara’s work draws inspiration from her collections of vintage ephemera and old movies; she works with watercolor, ink and acyrlilc. Sophia Lee’s painting features intuitive calligraphy, capturing the movement of flowers through the brush strokes. Curating the show is Earl Speas, who uses traditional materials – ink and brush on rice paper – to capture movement and life, making the brush dance and the ink sing.
IMAGINE will run February 1 – February 28, 2019. It is open to the public starting Friday, February 1st. An artist’s reception will be held Sunday, February 3 from 1-4pm. There’s a new dog in town!
Artist Rikki List called a few weeks ago and said she had a surprise – and could I meet her at Art Works? Sure!
As I walked up to the corner, Rikki waved me over to the partial median along Octavia Boulevard. “There’s someone I’d like you to meet,” she said…
To my stunned surprise, there sat a near perfect image of Darla the Dog dressed in a sporty jogging suit with a windbreaker emblazoned with the message, “DOG EAT DOG WORLD.”
This Darla replica will replace our beloved Mr. Dog, who was in need of repairs too extensive for continued outdoor living. Mr. Dog has moved on to another life, and now we have the gorgeous Miss Dog.

Hayes Valley Art Works presents “Creatures: A Show of Paintings and Prints” by Barbara Oplinger.
Bay Area artist Barbara Oplinger brings her love and sensitivity for all animals – and the necessity of dogs in her life – to the canvas in this exhibit of recent work. Her colorful paintings express devotion to all kinds of creatures with whimsy and metaphor. Barbara earned her BFA at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Her studies in painting, sculpture, stained glass and animation led to eclectic art commissions and a variety of employment, including mask maker for the Boston Ballet’s “Nutcracker,” clay sculptor for Grandmaster Flash’s “U Know What Time It Is” video claymation, and pictorial billboard painter. “Creatures” features images of animals she has known or admired.
An opening reception will be held Friday, November 2 from 6-8pm at HVAW Gallery, 295 Oak Street, San Francisco. The exhibition runs November 2 – 25, 2018. F

SFAC’s Passport 2018 comes to Hayes Valley Art Works! 
René Yañez was an artist, curator and producer who lived and worked in San Francisco. A founder and former Artistic Director of Galería de la Raza, Yañez was one of the first curators to introduce the contemporary concept of Mexico’s Day of the Dead to the United States. Active as both a visual and performing arts curator, he curated numerous exhibitions including “Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge.” Until his last day he remained a strong role model and vital cultural force in the San Francisco arts community.”
Rene’s stamp will be administered by his son and artist Rio Yanez.

Step 2: Pick up your Passport and event map at Home Base/Will Call (Patricia’s Green) between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 21 come rain or shine.
Step 3: Follow the Passport map to local businesses where artists will be waiting to stamp your passport with an original artwork.
Step 4: Allow 3-4 hours to complete the route. Bring sunscreen and plan to shop and eat along the way!

Hayes Valley Art Works presents “Protect and Resist: Art from The Arc of San Francisco.” The exhibit is a group show featuring the work of artists from The Arc San Francisco’s ArtReach Studios. The artists consider what the words protect and resist mean personally, connecting the creative process to a social issue each individual feels passionate about. Protect and Resist reflects various historical lessons, discussions, and collaborations surrounding the themes of art and activism. This focus on the intersection of personal expression and personal politics gives each artist the opportunity to explore ways to communicate complex political and social issues through striking visual forms, from poster art to large-scale paintings to mixed-media sculpture.The center of this exhibit is the “Recycle Tree,” a large mixed-media installation that was conceived and designed by ArtReach Studios artists. As a group, they collaborated on a single idea that would reflect everyone’s mutual passion for protecting the environment while also resisting against the pernicious forces that threaten its health and longevity. The installation was hand-built from all recyclable materials and is a physical reminder that everything we consume has a direct connection to the natural world.
About the Arc: The Arc San Francisco is a lifelong learning center for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities serving over 700 clients in San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo counties. Our two art programs, Howard Street and ArtReach Studios, promote the advancement of visual artists from The Arc SF through exploration, education, exhibitions and entrepreneurship. Our artists create fresh, powerful artwork that reveals not only innate ability, but also a point of view that is important and unique in our community. Please bring empty plastic water bottles to the event to transform! - Transform the Maker’s Shed into a community Portrait Gallery – Create portraits – of yourself, friends, neighbors, pets, or other community members – to transform the wooden Maker’s Shed on site into a community portrait gallery using reused and upcycled materials. Please bring any materials or recycled materials from the neighborhood to use in your portraits. All portraits will fit into approximately 3″ diameter roughly circular spaces on the exterior of the Portrait Gallery.

Rikki List’s popular Mr. Dog sculpture returned – just in time for Design Week!
Mr. Dog had a little work done…. a face lift and a new…. sweater! He joined us for the opening of the Pop Up Art show for Design Week in early June, and Rikki and the crew “walked the dog” up to Patricia’s Green, where he enjoyed the Silent Disco and hung out with artist Charles Gadeken (creator of the “Squared” sculpture) and other party goers!

“Quintuple: 5 Artists from the Heart of Hayes Valley” Opens Sunday September 17th from 11am to 5pm
Come and join us for our two inaugural events – a soft opening of our new space at Octavia and Oak, and the opening of our new Nexus Gallery inaugural exhibit.

The gallery’s inaugural exhibit is “Quintuple: 5 Artists from the Heart of Hayes Valley.” Earl Speas, Barbara Early, Jennifer Maria Harris, Stephen Santamaria, and Daniel Farnan exhibit work focusing on five variations on the theme of vision: how we see life and movement; how we see ourselves in relation to others; how we see and learn to interpret nature and the world around us; how we shape our vision through our stories, both those we tell ourselves and those that we learn; and how our vision shapes community and connection.
Please and join us to celebrate a vision of community enhancement through creativity and joining together in our new garden space and gallery.
Hayes Valley Art Works has moved!
We are now located on Octavia between Oak and Lily, in a new space with our container gallery, new programming, and upcoming shows. Site set-up is well underway, and we expect to be offering new programming this fall. Your input is welcome. Volunteers and artists encouraged as we seek to expand hours and offerings.
Through our partnership with Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association we have been granted a month-to-month lease arrangement on Parcel R on Octavia between Oak and Lily. We have submitted our proposal for a longer-term occupancy, and hope for this approval in the coming weeks. Continuing to partner with Friends of the Urban Forest to host young trees for Public planting, we have relocated our soon-to-be street trees and are looking forward to upcoming public planting events. Please come by during our open hours to say hello, currently Friday through Monday 11am to 5pm, as we seek to expand our volunteer pool and open hours.
We are a Member of Intersection for the Arts. Intersection provides Bay Area based artists and arts organizations with resources, community and cultural space in order to develop sustainable practices. Visit http://www.theintersection.org.

Pop Up: Uneasy Structures

Opening Reception: Saturday, March 4th, 2:00 – 4:00pm
Join us for the opening of Uneasy Structures!
This pop-up group exhibition features work by six West Coast artists, Ian Dolton-Thornton, Cara Levine, Bailey Hikawa, Rachel Higgins, Lisa Rybovich Crallé and Emma Spertus. This event will also feature performances throughout the reception.
“Uneasy Structures” is an emergent installation combining a range of large-scale sculpture practices at an outdoor, public space. Through a variety of materials and scale, each of the six artists explore concepts of borders, fences, corporations, networks, and divisions in relationship to public space. Installed within a fenced-in area, this concept becomes even more heightened. With materials ranging from bread to styrofoam to plywood, there is an inherent need to create in our current unstable moment. This emergent and adaptive way of bringing six artists together is a necessary way of utilizing creative thinking moving forward.
“Uneasy Structures” will be on view through Sunday, March 18th.
This exhibition was organized by Emma Spertus and Samantha Reynolds, Art Program Coordinators for Hayes Valley Art Works under Project O.
Project O identifies public spaces in San Francisco to provide emerging and experimental artists with exhibition and residency spaces. By organizing artists and partnering with local art organizations, Project O creates accessible art spaces for the local community and greater Bay Area to enjoy. Bay Area artists experimenting and developing new ideas are at the center of Project O’s focus and support.
Love In 2017
Join us on Sunday, February 26th, 12:00pm- 4:00pm on the corner of Octavia and Hayes St.
During the month of St. Valentine’s, we call on you to counter hate by creating cards for those in need of love.
Michelle Echenique, a mixed-media artist and Hayes Valley Art Works volunteer, will be facilitating a creative space to invite participants to create a love note for anyone in need: friends, family, acquaintances, community leaders, refugees, immigrants, the homeless and others.
A Love-In is a gathering or party at which people are encouraged to express feelings of friendship and love, associated with the hippies of the 1960s. It has been interpreted in different ways by different organizations, but is often connected to protesting local, social or environmental issues. This event is part of the 100 Days Action initiative.
ONE Year Anniversary Celebration & Opening Reception
Friday, December 9, 6 – 8pm
Please join us for a special night event celebrating the one-year anniversary of Hayes Valley Art Works!
To mark the occasion, this event will also serve as the opening reception for a dual-solo exhibitions featuring work by local artists by Nicolas Hullibarger “Making Space” and Kate Kuaimoku “Semblance of Order”.
In addition to the art exhibited, we will have music, refreshments and tents set up in preparation for the forecasted rain.

Hayes Valley Art Works is pleased to present What Century Are These Paintings From: New Works By Paulette Humanbeing. Join us for the opening reception on August 26, 2016 from 5-7pm. The exhibition will be on view from August 26 – September 24, 2016.
Paulette will be exhibiting paintings of dogs, the Hayes Valley Artworks lot, and two presidents. Also shown will be production art from the Jeffrey Vallance Interview Film, a painting of the Los Angeles skyline, a painting of a liquor store in Oakland, a painting of 22nd street in San Francisco, and her painting of a Thomas Kinkaide painting.
Her paintings are a mixture of studio work and plein air work, done in oil paint. Paulette hopes to show beauty in the things she paints, regardless of how unpleasant a subject may be. For instance, she painted a stuffed dog that isn’t really beautiful, but the paintings of the dog are beautiful, portraying it favorably like when you get the pimples taken out of your high school senior year photos. She hopes that her paintings are lies that tell some kind of truth, like Picasso is quoted as saying except in different words.

HVAW is excited to announce the residency of Stairwell’s during the month of August
Join Stairwell’s and HVAW for a culminating open house event on Sunday, August 28, 12-3pm. Explore the site and surrounding area, take part in circuit training of the non-athletic variety and win prizes for doing something, anything, as best you can. Refreshments will be served while supplies last.

A collaborative project led by San Francisco-based artists Sarah Hotchkiss and Carey Lin, Stairwell’s creates new experiences that challenge familiar understandings of everyday surroundings. The project has taken many forms, from site-specific interventions to group walking tours to curated exhibitions. Stairwell’s seeks to foster temporary communities of curious and engaged individuals, providing opportunities for connections and changes in perspective.
