If this ground could speak, what would it say? Would it be wounded? Rejuvenated? Each artist featured in Present Ground calls attention to the unending, evolving nature and impact of the physical site as it moves into the future. This exhibition serves as a recognition of the repurposing of space that has created multiple stories, histories and narratives left imprinted in the dirt.
The physical site of Hayes Valley Art Works has had multiple histories and roles. With the removal of the central freeway in the late 1990s and remodel of Octavia Boulevard, the site was left uninhabited. It is currently deemed by the city of San Francisco as a temporary art and community space, and will subsequently be rebuilt into a low-income housing in the coming years. Constantly evolving, the narrative of the site continues.
Join us for the opening reception of Hayes Valley Art Works’ second open call Present Ground on Saturday, October 1 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm. The opening reception will feature a live performance by Georgia Carbone. Present Ground is free and open to the public.
